Skincare Review: SEED Citrus Thyme Body Lotion & Soap

(seed) Products

Howdy!  I’m excited to share my first review as a part of the Beauty Debutante team.  I had the opportunity to review the line of 100% natural body care collection from (seed), owned by husband and wife team Benjamin and Rebecca Gournay.  SEED was born after the couple looked for ways to detoxify their life both physically and mentally in hopes of being able to become pregnant.  Benjamin, who loves wine, was inspired about harnessing the power of the grape seed after Rebecca came across of a line of upscale spa products made from grape seeds, and the rest is history.

SEED products are paraben free, preservative free, phthalate free with no artificial colors, no animal ingredients and they do not test on animals.

Now a small disclaimer about myself – I’m not the most healthy person.  I don’t pig out on soda or chips, but I do require red meat every few days and definitely enjoy all forms of dairy (especially chocolate)…  I don’t exercise as much as I’d like to and it’s rare that I’m reading what’s on the back of the products I buy.  That being said, I do know that being healthy in all ways, is important – not only to me but for the future of my rambunctious three year old son.  Additionally, even though I live in South Texas where we have 3 seasons (hot, hotter, and hotter than heck), I don’t use lotion or sunscreen and my body wash normally is whatever I bought on sale at the grocery store.  I don’t like to feel sticky or oily – I get that enough of that with the heat and humidity.

My package of products arrived on a nice hotter than heck day, neatly arranged with a hand written card from Benjamin himself.  You can tell that this couple really is passionate about their product, which is impressive.  I received the Invigorating Citrus Thyme Body Lotion, Restful Lavender Sage Body Lotion,  and Invigorating Citrus Thyme Body Soap.   First up is the Restful Lavender Sage Body Lotion ($8.99 on SEED’s web store ).

This lotion has an amazing lavender smell that just makes you want to close your eyes in bliss.  This by far was my favorite product.  The lotion is made from grape seeds so obviously it’s slightly oily.  Having something slick on my hands was irritating at first but the lotion absorbs into your skin well and actually made my skin feel softer after use.  I’ve already gone through a quarter of the bottle – I love it that much.  The first time I used it, it was a little watery but it was also hot – thanks UPS for keeping those trucks nice and warm.  I put it in the fridge to cool down and get back to its original formula and left it overnight before trying it.

Next I tried the Invigorating Citrus Thyme Body Lotion ($8.99).

Unfortunately, my bottle’s neck was cracked from transit, but it didn’t affect the product or dispensing the product.  All I can say about this one is WOW, who needs coffee in the mornings?  The smell of citrus was super overpowering for me – I felt like I had just washed with lemons.  The smell lingered through the day as well, which was great for a pick me up… I’d just smell my arm.  However, I also felt like I should be in the kitchen, washing dishes.  The oily feeling lasted a little longer with this one, which I’m not fully used to as a non-lotion user – the oily feeling only lasted a few minutes before I felt that my skin was moisturized but not oily.

Finally, I have the Invigorating Citrus Thyme Body Soap ($4.49).

The bar is of good weight and size.  It felt very comfortable in my hand because the bottom is curved to fit in the palm of your hand.

This is made of all natural ingredients with refined pomegranate, apricot and strawberry seeds to “gently exfoliate and cleanse”.  Okay warning here, I have never exfoliated in my life.  The most I’ve done was use the sugar scrub tester at the mall.  I don’t quite know what I was going to get but I don’t know that I was fully prepared for this.  The bar itself reminded me of oatmeal in its smell.  Oatmeal isn’t listed as an ingredient but the bar does include “Natural Fragrance”.   While in the shower, I concentrated on rough spots like my elbows, knees and the bottom of my feet as well as the softer parts of my body and I have to say, it HURT.  The strawberry seeds were very coarse on my skin and felt like a scratchy mesh bag was rubbing against my skin.  I ended up picking off the strawberry seeds to finish washing and it made the bar feel much softer until I exposed more seeds.  I felt like the bar was being used up quite quickly in my hand because of how many seeds would be exposed.  After my shower, my skin didn’t feel any softer but I did see tons of loose skin on my legs and feet that had to be buffed off with a coarse towel.  I definitely would use this bar once a week or a few times a month but for me, the coarseness of the strawberry seeds would rule this out as my daily body wash.

Overall I was very pleased with this brand for being my first 100% natural product. If you’re looking for something all natural to soothe your skin or wake up the senses, SEED is a great product to try.

I too have reviewed this line and love it! I agree with your assessment on the exfoliating bar–too rough for my body but it works nicely for my callused feet. The invigorating citrus scented lotion make me feel happy!
