As sunscreen products go (particularly those who use chemicals instead of mineral blockers – you can learn more about that in Kate’s post “The Science of Sunscreen“), this stuff does everything it says. I tested it for two hours in the sun (C. and I were planting tomato plants yesterday. We’re thrilling, I know) and didn’t burn.
Plus – and this is the really miraculous part – it absorbed into my skin like lotion. It wasn’t greasy, didn’t leave a slimy residue… just sank in and stayed.
Here’s a little bit about the SmartShield brand:
In 1992, our family found out Harl’s freckle wasn’t a freckle. It was a precancerous spot.
We were like most people. We knew we should wear sunscreen, but we didn’t always do it. Sunscreen was always too messy, too greasy and too smelly. So, we set out to develop a sunscreen that people would want to use. A tough sunscreen that absorbed quickly into the skin, provided all-day protection, and didn’t interfere with our everyday activities.
We wanted a smarter sunscreen: Non-oily, light on the skin and eco-friendly.
We found the perfect formula in 1995. And people love it. When they feel it on their skin, they’re hooked.
I do have to say, I’d probably like the product more if it were mineral blockers, not chemical (they use Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate, Octocrylene and Padimate… say those 5x fast!), but it does seem to do what it advertises. The product is $11.99 for a 4.5 oz. bottle at SmartShield.com (but those of you who want to shop need to use the coupon code Sun2 for $2 off ANY online order).

As a very fair skinned person who needs to wear SPF all the time, I love the fact that this product sinks in fast! There’s nothing worse than putting on sunscreen only to feel like it’s rubbing off on everything you touch.

I like that their site educates users: I ve never known that:
“If SPF 30 is good, SPF 60 must be even better.”
SPF 30 blocks 96.5% of UV rays. SPF 60 adds less than 1% of protection (97.4%) but adds significantly more active ingredients which can be harsh to the skin and might cause allergic reactions.
thanks for information!
